Day 258 – December 24
God with us
“Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of first fruits of his creatures.”
Do you ever wonder how many times in our lives we’ve forgotten where all our good gifts come from? It’s so easy to become numb to the Lord and His goodness toward us, and when we do instead of being a people full of gratitude and praise, we become disgruntled and pout. In Exodus, it’s amazing to read the story of the Israelites wandering in the wilderness after being rescued by the Lord from slavery only to begin to gripe and pout because life wasn’t what they thought it would be along the way. Does this sound familiar to us? The truth is that all of us have forgotten we were slaves in sin, but the love of God and His light in us rescued us from darkness and shame and shines in and through us in Christ.
Nothing we will ever receive, will ever do, or will ever be is truly good apart from God. In order for us to live lives that are content and truly satisfied, Jesus must be enough. Desire alone isn’t a bad thing. God made us to be people with desires in our hearts. He simply doesn’t give us those desires until we delight ourselves in Him (Psalm 37:4).
On this Christmas Eve, remember that the greatest gift you’ll receive isn’t wrapped under a tree. It’s the love of God and His goodness that goes unseen each and every day. Aren’t you grateful for how good our God truly is?
We’re more than conquerors in Christ.
